I heard this quote recently and thought I would like to share some ideas. “Glass half empty, glass half full…well either way you won’t be going thirsty.” It was from a song by the name of King. At face value, one might say this person is just being optimistic. In some ways, yes, that is the case. But typically the stance or association with optimism is the glass “half full” side. So this line might just be saying something different. I want to believe that is the case, so let assume it is.
With that in mind, I find it interesting that the speaker ignores the metaphorical optimistic perspective along with the pessimistic side as well. It’s like, “if you are worried about all this you forget the sheer fact that you have water to begin with!” That is to say, having the ability to get to choose between optimism and pessimism, in of itself is a privilege. If you have an empty cup, you don’t even get to choose! So I think this line is speaking more to gratitude than optimism. Perhaps it’s saying, “ be grateful that you can even look in your corner and see something there.”
this reminds of two things the saying, “you can’t pour from an empty cup” and a song my friend Jawad Mecka wrote on his new album. (Link below if you are interested!) but as far as the empty cup analogy, it’s like, some people are worried about having something in their cup where there are those trying to pour whatever they have into another’s cup, only to find their own empty. Really makes you think….maybe our priorities are off balance in both situations. Worrying so much about how you feel about water in your cup verses run yourself dry to help those around you.
wouldn’t it be nice if we could just continuously fill our cup and just give from the overflow? Haha I’m probably thinking about this so much cuz I just finished a good cup of tea. Any how, check out Jawad’s new album and let me know if you find the line that connects to this whole cup and water idea!
