So, I was walking around school, trying to find a building.....,and that was when I ran into this girl wearing something I was a bit surprised by. It was a Muslim girl wearing an American flag colored Hijab scarf. Kinda hard to miss, so I greeted her. For some reason she became quite curious and quickly asked if I spoke Arabic, I said no but I know a few things like "Ke fal Hal?!" but, that was really it. She then proceeded to ask me why I didn't know Arabic, "was it too hard", she asked. I responded by saying no but....well, it is a bit difficult, considering the time I have been spending on it. Soon after that we said our goodbyes and went on our separate ways. It wasn't until about a minute or so later that I realized something that shook me in my tracks. That girl was representing something we as people, as Americans, are forgetting these days. I would even venture to say we are throwing it away. We have forgotten what it means to be a unified community with our fellow Americans. We let our biases, groundless as some may be, blind us from what is real. This young Muslim college student had enough confidence to walk around with a American BRAND ON HER FACE, with a smile. Isn't that what it means to be under one flag? Our community, shouldn't that stand above preconceived notions? I couldn't contain myself and had to draw what I just witnessed. So here's to you Flag Hijabi girl, you are more American than many of us here.
